Concussions
A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury caused by a force to the head that causes the head to move rapidly back and forth. The brain is the most complex and delicate organ in our body. Brain injuries are unique in that they can change our cognition, mood and behavior. Treatment of brain injuries can require a team of specialists such as neurologists, neurosurgeons, psychiatrists, neuropsychologists, and therapists.

When the brain experiences a concussive impact, brain tissue shifts and tears, causing ionic, metabolic, and physiological changes. Immediately after the brain is concussed, it is in a vulnerable and exposed state, requiring rest while it begins the process of healing. Introducing second, third, fourth and so on, impacts to a brain that is already in this vulnerable state increases the risk of later-in-life degenerative brain disease, including chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). |
There are preventative measures that are designed to minimize and protect against repeated head impacts in football. These preventative measures are known as return-to-play protocols and concussion-management protocols. Their implementation is strongly supported by the medical community. Preventative measures have been known by some sports organizations for decades. Despite this knowledge, some of these sports organizations did not employ these preventative measures to protect athletes only until recently, when faced with criticism and exposure by the media. |
We represent athletes who are experiencing cognitive deficits as a result of concussions and repetitive head trauma. We do so in individual cases, class cases, and in state and federal courts throughout the country.
